Stories of the Day
Most on the Left will never see their intolerance. “There’s a new blacklist. Its members are anyone who dares to oppose gay marriage, or gay behavior of any sort. The punishment, even for icons of the tech industry, is to have their careers deep-sixed; all in the name of “inclusiveness” and “tolerance.” We have reached the point that these very fine words, inclusiveness and tolerance, have become the tools of a new totalitarianism that strikes at freedom of expression, freedom of political action and freedom of religion for every American. This blacklist is the opposite of freedom. It is absolute intolerance. It is the apogee of exclusiveness. It is bigoted, biased, hate-filled, discriminatory and totalitarian. It is the ghost of Jim Crow, the shade of McCarthy, walking alive again among us today. It has no place in a free society.” Resisting the New Blacklist
“So I guess it’s fair for people on the right to go after donors to lefty causes? Without mercy. Related: Purge The 7 Million: The Purity of the Volk must be restored. “According to Wikipedia, 7,001,084 people voted for Prop 8. Why do any of those people still have jobs? Shouldn’t they all be forced to resign? And why should they have the privilege of living in California at all? I say round them up and move them someplace where they won’t do any harm.” One reason why rich white guys like Eich are being targeted so viciously is that the many black churches who supported Proposition 8 — and, indeed, put it over the top — are out-of-bounds for criticism. [Snip] ANOTHER UPDATE: Mozilla set a new company record today for online customer dissatisfaction.” JAMES TARANTO: Justice Thomas Was Right: Citizens United And The Defenestration of Brendan Eich.
Read the WHOLE thing. “This is part of why conservatives have been leery about the Democrats’ proposals to force disclosure of the kind of donors who give to Republicans (while exempting many of their own major donors). The left claims it wants full disclosure of political participation in the name of transparency and electoral integrity. We now know this isn’t remotely true. They want disclosure so they can extend the purge of heretics from private life and thus deter libertarian and conservative political participation. They want a permanent record of everyone’s political opinions to use against them at any time in the future. This is about disenfranchisement and blacklisting and nothing more. That should have been apparent before, but it’s crystal clear now.” Brendan Eich, the Culture Wars, and the Ground Shifting Beneath Our Feet
Well, isn’t this special. “The State Department has no idea what happened to $6 billion used to pay its contractors.” $6 Billion Goes Missing at State Department
It’s about time. “On Breitbart News Saturday, one of the country’s leading authorities on good government and crony capitalism said that conservatives, liberals, libertarians, and millennials are uniting against the bipartisan crony capitalism that has grown government and encroached upon the liberties of all Americans. Peter Schweizer, the Breitbart News Senior Editor-at-Large and Government Accountability Institute President, said Ronald Reagan was critical of crony capitalism and those in his mold are aghast by how “corporations have corrupted the political process.” Schweizer mentioned that there is a difference between being “pro-corporation and pro-free markets.” PETER SCHWEIZER: CONSERVATIVES, LIBERTARIANS, MILLENNIALS UNITING AGAINST CRONY CAPITALISM
The war against boys and men is real. “Cultural progressives often talk about something called “hegemonic masculinity.” By this progressives and feminists mean the standards we use to determine what an ideal man is in a particular culture. Michael Kimmel and Amy Aronson, in The Gendered Society Reader, describe American hegemonic masculinity this way:
In an important sense there is only one complete unblushing male in America: a young, married, white, urban, northern, heterosexual, Protestant, father, of college education, fully employed, of good complexion, weight, and height, and a recent record in sports . . . Any male who fails to qualify in any one of these ways is likely to view himself–during moments at least–as unworthy, incomplete and inferior.
With this definition, progressives and feminists are on what seems to be a campaign to “dismantle” any sense of “American” masculinity. Additionally, part of the mission is to redefine all of America’s problems in terms of what males, especially white males, have done to ruin society. As many have argued before, the first step in solving social ills is to pathologize boyhood and numb it into oblivion.” The Hegemonic Misandry Continues: ADHD
No thanks to the Left. “The threats by the Taliban did not stop millions of Afghans from voting for a post-Karzai government. As with every election in Iraq –the next one is April 30– the legacy of America’s involvement in both countries grows more secure. President Obama has done little to assist Iraq in its effort to hold on to representative government, and his desire to scamper on Afghanistan is evident as well, but large majorities in both countries strive to hold on to self-government, which was the gift America gave them thanks to the force of the American military and the leadership of George W. Bush. [Snip] The Obama/Hillary narrative –most recently expressed by the former Secretary of State to Thomas Friedman– is that they “restored American leadership” in the world. This side-splitter gets a referendum in 2014 and a final verdict in 2016. If Hillary hopes to succeed President Obama, she has to be urging him privately to throw everything into maintaining Afghanistan self-rule and returning Egypt to friendly relations with the U.S.” Afghans Voting By The Millions
The Left doing what the Left does best… making things worse. “When Bush left office at the end of his second term, the region was mostly stable aside from Iran’s nuclear program. By the time Obama had finished his first term, it was in a state of endless war. It is still in a state of war today. While Bush only overthrew Saddam, Obama overthrew Mubarak, Ben Ali, Gaddafi and Saleh. The difference lay not only in the scale of their respective regime change operations, but in their relative impacts on regional stability. Saddam had invaded other countries and cultivated terrorists, while the governments that Obama helped overthrow, aside from Gaddafi, were not expansionistic, were not obsessed with building up WMD’s and had helped maintain regional stability. Bush had sought to stabilize the Middle East by removing Saddam. Obama instead destabilized it by trying to remove every government that was in any way friendly to the United States and was not covered by the umbrella of the Saudi GCC.” Obama’s Mideast Nightmare
Our country should N OT be ready for Hillary. “Hillary Clinton’s greatest accomplishments as Secretary of State — it sounds like a good idea for a short article. Perhaps a short article assigned by a malicious editor. Asked by a friendly questioner (Tom Friedman) to identify her greatest accomplishments as Secretary, Hillary Clinton gave a two-minute answer that has a sort of “Where’s Waldo?” quality to it (video below). It might be passable for low-information voters, but she should probably sharpen that answer up a bit as she prepares to seek higher office. There is an unintentionally satirical component to her brief answer as well. She claims as part of the legacy of her accomplishments our ability “to deal with problems like Ukraine because we’re not so worried about a massive collapse in Europe and China…” Somebody cue the laugh track!” HILLARY’S GREATEST HITS
What fascism looks like. “Progressives say: It doesn’t matter what someone’s alleged “intent” is, all that matters is whether someone felt hurt or demeaned by words. The White Liberal agrees — so long as that rule is being applied against their common enemy, conservatives. But when Progressives demand that it also be applied to White Liberals In Good Standing like Alec Baldwin or Steven Colbert, suddenly White Liberals start talking about “intent” and “context” and other such nuances.” White Liberals: We’ll Say Who’s Racist
He’s such a liar. “As to Obama, it is well known that he stood against gay marriage during the entire time he was running for the White House from 2008 to just before his re-election in 2012.To name just a few times he came out in opposition to gay marriage, in 2004, Obama insisted, “I am not a supporter of gay marriage.” In 2008, he said, “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman.” By 2010 he was still against it, saying, “I have been to this point unwilling to sign on to same-sex marriage primarily because of my understandings of the traditional definitions of marriage,” he said in an interview. Of course, just before his re-election, Obama suddenly did a 180 and announced that he was in favor of gay marriage. He famously “evolved.” But gay activists gave Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton decades to “evolve.” Branden Eich wasn’t even given a week.” MOZILLA CEO DESTROYED FOR SAME GAY MARRIAGE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY OBAMA, CLINTONS
“Eich’s defenders, particularly on the right, have enjoyed pointing out that his views on same-sex marriage are in line with those President Barack Obama espoused as recently as the spring of 2012. Actually, though, even Obama’s more recent views are out of sync with the campaign to oust Eich. When he endorsed same-sex marriage, the president was careful to say that opponents shouldn’t be treated as uniformly “mean-spirited” and even that he deeply respects some of them.” Mozilla’s Gay-Marriage Purge
“It’s a good thing we’re nothing like those civilizations that stone their citizens for failing to adhere to strict dogmas. We are blessed to live in a country of inclusion, diversity, and tolerance, so long as you think like our rule-making elitists. And thank God for a society that chills debate to encourage conformity or suffer strict consequences. For we have evolved to be nothing like those backwards totalitarian worlds ruled by fascists where people are punished for their beliefs. We have advanced to be distinct from places that hang those who deviate from the demanded conformity. Progressive, indeed. The persecuted have become the persecutors, and they lack the self-awareness to recognize it. Thank goodness we are nothing like intolerant societies that are ruled by mobs. We have evolved.” Evolved to the Enlightened Dark Ages: The rigid dogma of secular liberalism
“Much of the shock following the removal of Brendan Eich from the position of Mozilla CEO came from the realization that, in a manner of speaking, America was now at war. True it’s a culture war, not a physical conflict. But if you were waiting for the moment when the Cold Civil War actually begins, this might be it. Not that anyone should have been taken aback. After all, Larry Summers was sacked as president of Harvard following his criticism of Cornell West’s rap album and as a result of a 2005 speech in which he suggested that the under-representation of women in science and engineering could be due to a ‘different availability of aptitude at the high end’.” Eich
“Their shirts come in many colors, but their true colors never change: an ugly, ignorant, power-hungry mob utterly committed to crushing dissent by any means it can. Mr. Weinstein and his ilk want to put us in camps, and crass totalitarians of similar stripe may be found everywhere from the executive suites at Mozilla to the halls of power at the IRS. It’s a shameful spectacle, and an unworthy one.” The Liberal Gulag: The Brendan Eich case brings out the nature of liberal fascism.
“Don’t you people read? Haven’t you learned anything from history? ‘Advancements’ earned through tyranny never endure. You can only win a debate by suffocating your opposition for so long. Your strategy is doomed for failure, because it has always failed. In the name of ‘fighting for the freedom to love,’ you’ve utilized hate. For the sake of ‘tolerance,’ you’ve wielded bigotry. In order to push ‘diversity,’ you’ve been dogmatic. You are everything you accuse your opponents of being, and you stand for all the evil things that you claim they champion. You are exposed. We see you for what you are: a force of destruction and division. You showed your hand, and now you’ll lose the game. It’s inevitable.” You are what you say we are: Bigots — Matt Walsh DESTROYS gay rights fascists
“In other words, no one had any reason to worry that Eich, a longtime executive at the company, would do anything that would negatively affect gay Mozilla employees. In fact, Mozilla Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker, his longtime business partner who now defends the need for his resignation, said this about discovering that he gave money to the Proposition 8 campaign: “That was shocking to me, because I never saw any kind of behavior or attitude from him that was not in line with Mozilla’s values of inclusiveness.” It’s almost as if that donation illuminated exactly nothing about how he’d perform his professional duties. But no matter. Calls for his ouster were premised on the notion that all support for Proposition 8 was hateful, and that a CEO should be judged not just by his or her conduct in the professional realm, but also by political causes he or she supports as a private citizen. If that attitude spreads, it will damage our society.” Mozilla’s Gay-Marriage Litmus Test Violates Liberal Values: The forced resignation of Brendan Eich will have a chilling effect on political discourse.
“One could be forgiven for throwing one’s hands up in despair at the sheer audacity of it all. A fortnight ago, as the federal government took to the courts to defend a rule that deliberately burdens the consciences of America’s more religiously devout entrepreneurs, the professional Left adopted the position that companies do not have consciences, griped that a harsh separation of the public and the private spheres was a recipe for the suffering of unpopular or put-upon individuals, and insisted that any links between the activities of an employee and the deeply held beliefs of his boss should be thoroughly shattered. Today, the opposite case is regnant. Defending the appalling hounding of Brendan Eich, progressives seem to have suddenly got the message: reminding critics that there exists no legal right to be the CEO of a non-profit; insisting correctly that this sordid and alarming little affair does not in any way implicate the First Amendment; and acknowledging that, the doctrine of at-will employment being what it is, a man may resign from his job for whatever reason — up to and including harassment. Well, comrades — which is it to be? The answer to this question, one suspects, is “whichever suits the moment.” Which is to say that the Eich affair is ultimately about power, not principle — the latest in a series of plays contrived to show who is in charge. Convenient as it might be to pretend otherwise, the Left does not truly believe that private companies may behave as they wish to, but that private companies may behave as the Left wishes them to — whether instructed by government or not.” The New Torquemadas: Brendan Eich would not recant, so he had to be punished.
“Well, I hope Mozilla suffers enough to dissuade others from giving in so easily. But isn’t OK Cupid, the instigator here, the proper target for retaliatory efforts?” BLOWBACK: After Eich resigns, conservatives slam Mozilla—and call for boycott.
“If we’re serious about taking down corporate officers who supported Proposition 8, and boycotting employers who promote them, we’d better get cracking on the rest of the list. Otherwise, perhaps we should put down the pitchforks.” Purge the Bigots: Brendan Eich is just the beginning. Let’s oust everyone who donated to the campaign against gay marriage.
“In our long history, Christians have had many setbacks in addressing cultural decay and misdirection. We have our 1960s; the early church had its Corinth. That didn’t mean that Christians shrank from challenging the social ills of Corinth, nor should we shrink from proclaiming the full spectrum of Christian teachings in order to shape our world now and in the future. We are sent out as sheep amidst the wolves, always — not to become wolves looking only for political power as an end to itself, but to spread love, joy, truth, and beauty so that our politics will follow the culture we can still shape and uplift.” Is the culture war reversal a boon for Christians?
Shhhh. Nothing to see here. It’s the Democrats being bad, so we can’t tell anyone. “Only in today’s perverse politically correct climate can four lawmakers be caught on a wire accepting bribes and gifts for official acts and have their actions brushed off due to racism. In fairness, laws presently on the books allow Pennsylvania legislators to take gifts legally. The fact that this is permissible is ludicrous, but the original investigation opened by then-attorney general Corbett (now Pennsylvania’s governor) probed whether these lawmakers accepted gifts and money in exchange for their votes against voter ID laws—clearly illegal to accept money for official acts. The point here is that the lawmakers took it upon themselves to enrich themselves at the hands of a phony lobbyist, but the national media has largely exercised their power to ignore the story—if you didn’t read about it or see it on television, it must not have happened, right?” The Media’s Selective Political Scandal Addiction: Chris Christie’s “baggage” is wall-to-wall news, but corrupt Democrats in Pennsylvania and California don’t need scrutiny.
Is the conservative media hurting our cause? “But the conservative media serve a second purpose, not only for their audiences but for the mainstream. The existence of the Right media means that the stories are being covered by someone, which relieves them of some of the responsibility they might otherwise feel to do the job themselves. Even better, from their point of view, they also believe the stories are being covered in such a way that the mainstream media can dismiss them and attack them. [Snip] Obama is Scotchguarded because the people who are supposed to be holding him to account are the ones holding the spray can.” Conservative media is unintentionally protecting Obama
They’re being pushed in that direction because of Leftist policies. The Left must eliminate the notion of God, so that our government becomes the new god. “Unlike Tocqueville’s Americans, and unlike the generations just before them, Millennials seem to be avoiding marriage, church and political affiliation, and to lack a sense of social trust. Only 19 percent say that generally speaking most people can be trusted, compared to 31 percent to 40 percent among older generations. [Snip] So is that just sort of happening? Or are things being pushed in that direction?” MICHAEL BARONE: Millennials’ Path of Least Resistance
Money in Politics
Memorize these facts! “According to OpenSecrets.org, from 1989 to 2014 rich donors gave Democrats $1.15 billion — $416 million more than the $736 million given to the GOP. Among the top 10 donors to both parties, Democrat supporters outspent Republican supporters 2-to-1. But what about the villainous Koch brothers, those conservative plutocrats supposedly seeking to control American politics? They rank 59th on the list of big givers — behind 18 unions and No. 1 Act Blue, the massive left-wing fund raiser that gives only to Democrats. Indeed, a recent book, “The New Leviathan,” says donations to Democrats outstrip those to Republicans 7-to-1. How can this be? Democrat support soars when you include unions, universities, superPACs, nonprofits, left-wing interest groups, and — ready for this? — Wall Street (which overwhelmingly favors Democrats). So Democrats don’t really want to restrain money in politics. Just the money that goes to Republicans. Voters need to stop listening to the lies. Since 2008, the number of people who call themselves middle class has plunged from 53% to 44%, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center.” Democrats: The Real Party Of The Rich
Speaking the truth that the Left doesn’t want you to hear. “Koch concludes that the current batch of administration policies “destroys value, raises costs, hinders innovation and relegates millions of citizens to a life of poverty, dependency and hopelessness.” This is strong stuff. And spot on. Think of Obamacare as the ultimate central-planning, collectivist, big-government approach. The government is mandating what health-care insurance to buy, and taxing you if you don’t buy it. You may lose your favorite doctor or hospital or insurance plan, all while job hiring and work effort are undermined. These intellectual eggheads tell you what you can and cannot do, and where you can and cannot do it. And they prescribe a multi-trillion-dollar government expansion of spending and taxing while they’re at it. The good news here is that Obamacare is incredibly unpopular. The bad news is that it’s going to be incredibly difficult to rewrite or replace this law. But Mr. Koch’s big fear is that collectivism can’t and won’t stop with Obamacare. He has a point. The Obama machine continues to roll out poverty-trap incentives, paying people not to work. Obama’s EPA is aiming to obliterate the entire coal industry and all the blue-collar workers in it. The president can’t even give the okay to the Keystone pipeline, which is favored by all but the far-Left environmental radicals. Obama’s National Labor Relations Board now wants to unionize college football players. Our corporate tax rates are the highest in the world. And the entire IRS tax system is so corrupt and complex, it has become a major hindrance to growth. I could go on and on.” Charles Koch Fights Back: Not with character assassination, but an economic formula for liberty.
“It appears highly likely the court, in a 2-1 ruling, will invalidate the IRS regulations permitting the federal subsidy, reversing District Judge Paul Friedman’s January 2014 opinion. That will set up a possible rehearing before the full D.C. Circuit court sitting en banc, followed by an inevitable Supreme Court review in the coming term, with a decision assured no later than June 2015 and possibly earlier given that federal funds are quite possibly being disbursed illegally. Judge Harry Edwards’ vote is not in doubt. He termed the plaintiffs’ argument to restrict subsidies to the state exchanges as “preposterous.” He sees the case, plain and simple, as a lawyerly creation manufactured after the fact to “gut the statute.” In so doing, he joins the bandwagon of bloggers and commentators who have consistently dismissed this challenge as fanciful. Yet the Obama administration is scared, and with good reason.” WILLIAM LEVIN: OBAMACARE DEATH THROES UPDATED
I think a lot of us know who the REAL stink burger is…. “The president’s speech at the University of Michigan on Tuesday was snarky and hit a low tone. Obama misrepresented Republican proposals, and then characterized them as a “stink burger.” Really? Is this the state of our political discourse from the man who claimed he wanted to elevate the debate? Shouldn’t he have left the demeaning language to a shouting surrogate suitable for talk radio? I guess if you’ll go on “Between Two Ferns” to promote your agenda, you’re not too worried about belittling the office, nor do you see the value in holding yourself above the fray and beyond the petty name calling. By now, it’s plain that there is not going to be any real attempt at governing for the remainder of this president’s term. Obama never learned how to work with Congress, and he never will. He doesn’t even see the utility in pretending to work with Congress the way Bill Clinton so effectively did.” The Insiders: The president takes the low road
Useful idiots lapping up whatever Obama dishes out. “Perhaps the biggest irony is that the young people Obama had in stitches are being forced to pay too much for health insurance in order to subsidize health care for others. In other words, they’re laughing at the pickle, but the joke is really on them.” Obama’s laughable stand-up routine
I will NEVER understand anyone on the Left. “I did not learn until this week that President Obama’s website, WhiteHouse.gov, regularly profiles young leftwing radicals it calls “Champions of Change.” Now, in a space of just a few days, two of the president’s “champions” have made news. One is Linda Sarsour, described by the White House as a “community activist” who specializes in “community organizing” and “immigrants’ rights advocacy,” and who “conducts trainings nationally on the importance of civic engagement in the Arab and Muslim American community.” Evidently, civic engagement need not be civil engagement. Ms. Sarsour has joined her voice to that of CAIR in the campaign to suppress Honor Diaries, a film about the brutalization and systematic inequality faced by women in Muslim-majority societies. Ms. Sarsour reacted to the widely viewed and acclaimed film by tweeting:
How many times do we have to tell White women that we do not need to be saved by them? Is there code language I need to use to get thru?
I’d note that the executive producer of Honor Diaries is the heroic Somali human rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. It features several courageous Muslim women, including Pakistani-born Qanta Ahmed, a medical doctor who has an important column about the film and the campaign to suppress it at NRO today. But there are indeed some “White women” involved in the writing, production and financing of the film, and that’s apparently too much for a “Champion of Change” to abide.” Obama’s Motley ‘Champions of Change’
Attempting to hide the truth. “Honor Diaries is an important film that explores the brutality and systematic inequality faced by women in Muslim-majority societies. It features both believing Muslim women, like Dr. Qanta Ahmed (whose compelling essay about the film was published here at National Review Online yesterday), and former Muslims like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the renowned author and human-rights activist. The purpose of Honor Diaries is to empower women by shining a light on the hardships they endure — including “honor” killings (i.e., murders over the perception of having brought shame to the family by violating Islamic norms), beatings, genital mutilation, forced marriage — particularly of young girls – and restrictions on movement, education, and economic opportunity. The film highlights authentic Muslim moderates struggling against the dead-end of Islamic supremacism. So naturally, the Council on American–Islam Relations (CAIR) does not want you to see it.” CAIR’s Jihad against Honor Diaries: The “civil rights” group hides Islam’s denial of civil rights to Muslim women.
Unreal. “As the meeting concluded CII Chairman Maulana Muhammad Khan Shirani noted that women by existing defied the laws of nature, and to protect Islam and the Sharia women should be forced to stop existing as soon as possible. The announcement comes a couple of days after CII’s 191st meeting where they dubbed laws related to minimum marriage age to be un-Islamic. After declaring women to be un-Islamic, Shirani explained that there were actually two kinds of women – haraam and makrooh. “We can divide all women in the world into two distinct categories: those who are haraam and those who are makrooh. Now the difference between haraam and makrooh is that the former is categorically forbidden while the latter is really really disliked,” Shirani said.” Council Of Islamic Ideology Declares Women’s Existence Anti-Islamic Hat tip: Roberta Heine, Palo Verde RW member
Unreal II. “Islamic teacher Hojatoleslam Ali recently spoke about the modesty of Sedigheh Zahra and attraction to opposite sex and ways of preventing sexual desire. Ali said it is forbidden in Islam to sit on a chair that is still warm from the body of a woman.” Iranian Cleric: Sitting on a Chair Which Is Still Warm from the Body of a Woman Is Not Allowed in Islam (Video)
Sent to me by a friend, with this comment: “Try doing this on a Mosque. I TRIPLE DARE YOU!” (Emphasis mine, because religious freedom seems to only be upheld as a value when it goes against Christianity.) “A city board on Thursday gave a Muslim group the go-ahead to remove six crosses from the roof and spires of a century-old former Catholic church so the now-vacant Gothic structure can be used as a mosque. More than 200 people had signed an online petition calling on the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board to deny an application by North Side Learning Center, the church’s new owner, to remove the crosses and build a six-foot chain-link fence. Before the vote to allow the church alterations, Chairman Don Radke said the board cannot interfere with a decision that involves religious freedom.” Islamic Group Gets OK to Cut Crosses off NY Church
Dear Lord. “’It really bothered my two kids,” parent Majed Moughni told the Free Press. “My son was like, ‘Dad, I really don’t feel comfortable getting these flyers, telling me to go to church. I thought churches are not supposed to mix with schools.’ Moughni added that he believes the flyers are “a serious violation of separation of church and state.” Noting that his kids had previously received something about a Halloween event at a church, he said he is worried that Christians are trying to convert Muslim kids through propaganda distributed at public schools.” Now Muslim parents are complaining about flyers for Easter egg hunts
